confuse airbrush tanning with misting booths which are extremely messy.
The second component of Luminess Tan™ is our highly innovative tanning
solution. The formulation features both an instant bronzer for immediate color
and tanning actives designed to physically darken skin. Our formulation
features dihydroxyacetone (DHA), which is approved by the FDA for external use.
So what is DHA?
The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) considers DHA-based tanners to be the
most effective sunless tanning solution. DHA is derived from glycerin (a type of sugar),
reacts with amino acids on the outer most skin cells, causing them
to change color and appear tan. The results are temporary and diminish
as the skin regenerates giving the appearance of a natural tan fade.
DHA, discovered in the late 1920’s by German researchers, is not absorbed through the skin into the body, and it has no known
toxicity. Today,
DHA is used as the primary active ingredient in high-end tanning products featured
in luxurious tanning salons and spas. Some self tanners also feature DHA; however,
most consumer products use a low percentage of DHA because of the high cost.
